Mandolin Lessons

I give mandolin lessons from my home in Portland, and sometimes in Brunswick and other places. I have a relaxed approach, tailoring lessons to the interests and needs of the student. I teach primarily by ear and I use a few chord diagrams and charts to help things along. I do read music, and if you prefer, we can work with sheet music. I incorporate music theory to help explain/analyze things as we go. I use a digital recorder to record what we’ve worked on, so that you can go home with a CD at the end of the lesson.
I’ve played mandolin for about 16 years. The repertoire for contra dancing turns out to be a mix of Irish, Scottish, Old-Time, French Canadian, Scandinavian, rock and roll, swing tunes, funk, blues, or anything else that the dancers like.
I’ve also been a mandolin instructor at Maine Fiddle Camp in Montville, ME (which I highly recommend!) for several summers now. Check out www.mainefiddle.org for more information.
